The Kalkberg (Limestone Mountain) is situated in the western part of the old town of Lüneburg. It used to be 80 meters high but has since shrunk to a size of 56 meters - due to its use as building material (plaster). Today the Kalkberg is a natural reserve. A foodpath leads up to the top, from where you can enjoy a unique view of Lüneburg. And not to worry - the canon you will find there, was only ever fired to alarm the population when a convict had fled from the local jail.
